Gifts for Our Children – Roots & Wings

Finally. Here's our chance to find our how everything 'wrong' with us is our parents' fault. Not really. But parenting may matter. How do parents parent? Though every parent-child relationship is unique, they fall into broad styles. You might complete this activity multiple times, once for each of your parents or parental figures, and possibly also for yourself as a parent of a child. In the feedback, you'll learn which of three styles best describes the parent you rate, how your parent varies along two dimensions, and how close your parent-child relationship is.

Estimated Time for Completion: 9 to 18 minutes

Trying the activity first makes the reading a lot more fun and insightful! But you don't need to do any activity to learn with the Copernican Revolution. Here's a link directly to this activity's reading; it will be on your certificate of completion too.

I created the Copernican Revolution Project so anyone can learn about psychology through self-exploration. With every activity, you’ll get personalized results, an interpretation guide, and a certificate of completion (perfect if you're here for class credit). To help discover psychological insights, I occasionally combine responses to update our guides, present at conferences, write papers, or help students learn statistics. Your data is strictly confidential, and I will never single you out.

You can skip any questions you prefer not to answer (though it may impact the precision of your results). While this isn’t legally classified as "research," I follow ethical guidelines and you can read the full details in our Terms of Service and Consent to Participate.

Once you get your results, please share them with friends and family! You might just inspire someone else to learn a little more about themselves.

May I please include your responses in the Copernican Revolution Project?  I appreciate your help, and you would be helping others learn about psychology too.  But if you're uncomfortable with your answers analyzed, it’s completely okay!  You'll still get your personalized feedback.  You can still read our interpretation guides.  And you'll still get a certificate of completion.
